Your 10-minute RITES skincare routine

Your 10-minute RITES skincare routine

Being a teenager can be stressful, so the last thing you need to be worrying about is your skincare regime. To save you the hassle we have put together the ultimate 10-minute routine to combat everything from pimples to oiliness. All you need is 5 minutes in the morning and 5 minutes in the evening to marvel at your skin!

Ready, set, go!

Cleanse and Exfoliate: 1 minute

Start your routine off by cleansing and exfoliating your skin. Gently massage our Foam Fighter foaming face wash over your skin. It is the ultimate daily face wash that fights to remove impurities while leaving your skin feeling fresh, renewed, and matte. You can also combine the Power Powder exfoliating powder to gently buff away the unhealthy cells for a noticeably smoother, clearer, and more refined complexion.

Treat: 3 minutes

Next, you will tone the skin with our refreshing toning wipes. The Fresh Crusader toning face wipes provide intensive cleaning for problem areas such as the pesky T-zone. Infused with Witch Hazel, cucumber and Aloe Vera, our wipes help to unclog the pores and provide hydration in one simple swipe. After toning apply our Disappearing Act spot control gel to specific problem areas and allow time for the product to penetrate the skin. It has been designed to remove excess oil and bacteria, while using natural elements to reduce inflammation.

Moisturise and Protect: 1 minute

Whether you are off to school, or getting ready to hit the sheets, you will want to make sure your face is moisturised. In the morning, use our Control Freak SPF30 moisturiser to moisturise and protect the skin. At night, use the Smart Hydrator repair moisturiser to repair your skin while you sleep. Be sure to apply the moisturiser to the face and neck, starting on the cheeks and spreading outwards and upwards, and if you are fast, then you may just have a few seconds to spare!

Get into the habit of following the above steps each day for a solid and effective skincare routine.

Skincare 101

Skincare 101

Most teenagers are reluctant to follow a good skincare routine and often wait to take care of their skin until a problem shows up – this is not the best approach! Whether you want to prevent or control oiliness, congestion and breakout or just maintain a healthy glow; you should start a skincare routine sooner rather than later. Age does not matter; our skin has the same basic needs at every age!

Your daily skincare routine can be fast, simple, and inexpensive. These skincare tips will help you develop a great skincare routine that works for your budget and your life.

  1. Thoroughly cleanse your face: Wash your face daily with an antibacterial face wash. We recommend our Foam Fighter foaming face wash. Gently rub 1 to 2 pumps of foam into your face with clean hands. Rinse off with water.
  2. Cleanse your skin with a facial toner: It is best to use a facial toner after cleansing to remove any excess oils or residue on the skin. It can be applied over the whole face, concentrating on the T-Zone (forehead, nose, and chin) which is more prone to oiliness and impurities. We recommend our Fresh Crusader toning face wipes. Use one wipe after cleansing the face, or during the day to remove excess dirt and oil.
  3. Care for the skin: Choose a moisturiser that is right for your skin type to leave your skin looking fresh and radiant. We recommend our Smart Hydrator repair moisturiser. A moisturiser for acne prone skin that is intensively hydrating, non-sticky, soothes irritation and redness, and helps to regain control over demanding blemish-prone skin. Your skin will feel smooth and supple after the first application. The active ingredients seep deep into the skin to produce new healthier skin cells, rather than excess oils. Do not fall into the trap of not moisturizing because you think you do not need more hydration. Hydration is a key factor in normalizing the skin and balancing oil production.
  4. Protect your skin: Facial care to protect your skin from external influence such as the sun is of utmost importance for all skin regardless of your age, gender, or ethnicity. Our Control Freak SPF30 moisturiser provides weightless protection that helps keep your skin matte, reduce blemishes, soothes the skin, and protects against harmful UV rays from the sun. Reduces oil production without clogging pores leaving the skin noticeably clearer and smoother. Spray directly onto the face and with clean hands gently rub into the skin making sure to cover all areas of the face. Best applied every morning after your morning cleansing routine.
  5. Intensive care for the skin: Exfoliate at least once a week with our Power Powder exfoliating powder. Powder scrub that unclogs pores and refines the skin texture while reducing blackheads and blemishes. It is an oil-free formula that leaves the skin noticeably smoother, clearer, and more refined. Place about 5 grams of powder in the palm of your hand. Add a small amount of water to make a ball of foam. Gently rub the foam into your face making sure to get into all difficult areas. Rinse off with warm water. EXPERT ADVICE: Mix Power Powder with 2 pumps of Foam Fighter for a 2 in 1 cleansing and exfoliating action!

Tailoring your skincare system and strengthening your skin from a young age can help allay future concerns. You would not wait till you are nutrient deficient before eating healthy foods; the same approach applies to your skin.

Get ahead of the skincare curve and start young. It is easier to prevent rather than fix the problem later!

Glowing skin is 7 easy steps away with this easy DYI facial!

STEP 1: Cleanse

It is important to consider when, how often and what type of face wash to use to effectively cleanse the skin. Always wash your face before bedtime and never skip the AM cleanse. Use lukewarm water to wash your face and do not turn the water temperature up too high – hot water is no friend to your skin! For oily and acne prone skin the best cleanser to use is a foaming cleanser to remove excess oil and dirt. Make sure to wash the T-zone and U-zone (around the jawline) as these areas tend to be oilier.

What to use: Foam Fighter – Foaming Face Wash
Daily foaming cleanser for gentle yet effective cleansing to remove impurities, surface oil and make-up. It is antibacterial and non-comedogenic.

STEP 2: Exfoliate

How often you exfoliate depends on your skin type. For oily and acne prone skin we recommend exfoliating 2 – 3 times a week. Do not over exfoliate your skin as it can lead to tiny micro tears, inflammation, and infection. Cleanse the skin first to remove dirt, oil, and unwanted debris. This will prepare the skin for more effective exfoliation and deeper cleanse.

What to use: Power Powder – Exfoliating Powder
Powder scrub that unclogs pores and refines the skin texture while reducing blackheads and blemishes. It is an oil-free formula that leaves the skin noticeably smoother, clearer, and more refined.

Power tip: Can leave the Power Powder to dry on the skin like a clay mask to draw out impurities from deep within your pores.

STEP 3: Tone

What is standing between you and clearer skin could be the absence of just one product! Toners are most helpful for oily and acne-prone skin. Use one wipe after cleansing the face, or during the day to remove excess dirt and oil.

What to use: Fresh Crusader – Toner Face Wipes
Toner wipes clears the skin and provides intensive cleaning for the T-zone and other problem areas. It helps to unclog the pores without over drying the skin and prevent blemishes.

It has been specially formulated to reduce the appearance of pimples, papules, pustules and help fade acne marks. STEP 5: Moisturise

The best moisturiser for oily skin is lightweight, fast absorbing and mattifying to the skin. It is important to use a moisturiser with a broad-spectrum SPF during the day to protect your skin from the sun. One bad sunburn in your lifetime can increase your risk of developing sun damage later in life. Prevention is better than cure and your future self will thank you for being skin smart!

What to use AM: Control Freak – SPF30 Moisturiser
Provides weightless protection that helps keep your skin matte, reduce blemishes, soothes the skin, and protects against harmful UV rays from the sun. STEP 6: Lip Care

Apply a thick layer of lip balm in the evening before you go to bed for intensive moisturisation. Your luscious lips will thank you in the morning! The ideal lip balm should not be sticky and should provide the same smooth texture every time you apply it.

What to use: Smooth Operator – Lip Balm

Nutricosmetics

Do skincare supplements really work?

YES! Using the correct skincare supplement will leave your skin clearer and glowing from within! Your body needs a balanced supply of nutrients to stay healthy and your skin, which is the largest organ in the human body, is no different. A skin-friendly supplement provides a 360-degree approach to skincare delivering targeted nutrients to the skin that we do not get in topical treatments.

People benefit from supplements because of the variation in genetics, exposure to environmental factors, free radical damage from oxidative stress, exposure to the sun, medical conditions and overall lifestyle choices. The process of aging and skin damage can be slowed down and even reversed through the appropriate use of skincare supplements.

What are nutricosmetics?

Nutricosmetics (nutrients + cosmetic) are products and ingredients that act as nutritional supplements to care for the skin, nails and hair. They work from the inside to promote beauty from within. Topical cosmetics target the outer layers of the skin and nutricosmetics target the deeper layers (heart of the skin). Nutricosmetics does not replace topical products; they complement and enhance the effects of topical cosmetics. Nutricosmetics offer a deep and focused action through micro-encapsulation, micro-fragmentation and bio-assimilation to delivery results where the skin needs it.

Why should some supplements be taken on an empty stomach?

Some supplements such as QMS Collagen Intravital Plus and RITES Vitality Champion has faster and better absorption of nutrients when taken on an empty stomach. That means taking them first thing in the morning, 30 minutes prior to eating, or two hours after a meal. Nutrients in the supplements pass through the stomach into the small intestine. Majority of nutrient absorption happens in the small intestine. From there these nutrients are transported via the blood circulation to the cells and tissues where they have a beneficial effect.

What are the benefits of using Collagen Intravital Plus?

QMS Collagen Intravital PlusWith Collagen Intravital Plus Nutricosmetics, Dr Schulte’s research into orthomolecular therapy for skin lead him to develop a nutritional supplement to provide alternative therapy of healthy skin. The supplement aims to build on the idea to create an optimum nutritional environment for the skin as deficiencies could lead to accelerated skin damage. Providing a supplement with the optimum concentration of necessary active ingredients could reverse existing signs of skin damage.

  • Overall improved skin quality

Do I have sensitive skin?

Sensitive skin can be affected by a variety of emotional and environmental factors. From change of season, climate, detergents, dust and even stress. The most important thing is to protect and strengthen the skin from irritation. Managing sensitive skin is an ongoing process. There is no miracle or overnight treatment, but with the right products and lifestyle you can effectively manage sensitivity.

What is the difference between sensitive, reactive and sensitized skin?

Sensitive skin: Truly sensitive skin is a skin type. It is genetic, meaning you are born with this skin type and it cannot change. Truly sensitive skin types may have allergies to food, dust, pollen and animals. They may also have a genetic predisposition to inflammatory skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis and rosacea. Truly sensitive skin is more common in lighter skin tones and affect more than 50% of people.

Sensitive skin is always red, warm to the touch, prone to little red splotches that do not seem to go away – especially around the nose, cheeks and chin. These are known as dilated blood capillaries. Sensitive skin is a manageable but not curable.

Reactive skin is a skin condition and aggravated by external environmental factors (sun, pollution, toxins, waste products, temperature changes) and harsh products or internal factors such as stress, medications and hormonal changes. Reactive skin is a result of poor barrier function (skin’s protective layer). The skin will respond easily with redness, but it will flare up and go down.

Sensitized or intolerant skin is associated with pricking, tightness and redness. The skin cannot tolerate the application of the products which are normally well tolerated. Sensitized skin can happen to anyone, regardless of skin type, skin colour or skin condition. Sensitized skin is not something you are born with and it can be reversed.

Inflammatory skin conditions such as Eczema, Psoriasis, Dermatitis and Acne is associated with redness, heat, pain, swelling, throbbing and oozing. The major difference between sensitive and inflamed skin is swelling.

Factors that aggravate sensitive skin:

  • Sun exposure
  • Exposure to air pollution
  • Frequent changes in temperature
  • Cold, harsh weather
  • Very hot water
  • Lack of sleep
  • Stress and late nights
  • Chlorine in swimming pools
  • Hormonal changes during your menstrual cycle or pregnancy
  • Dry skin
  • Dehydration
  • Wrong cosmetic products with harsh ingredients
  • Over exfoliation and excessive cleansing
  • Smoking, alcohol, caffeine
  • Stress (emotional, physical, environmental)

Common signs of sensitive skin:

  • Tingling, stinging, prickling, or burning
  • Warm to the touch
  • Often feels tight and uncomfortable
  • Is sometimes sore or sensitive to touch
  • Needs extra hydration in winter
  • Flushes easily after a spicy meal or drinking alcohol
  • Dries out during flights
  • Has patches of redness that may or may not fade
  • Has areas of uneven texture, with dryness and flakiness
  • The skin tends to be thinner and more translucent
  • Becomes itchy or develops a rash after contact with irritants
  • Turns red and dries out after a hot shower or bath

With sensitized skin, these symptoms go away once the skin has repaired itself. With naturally sensitive skin, these symptoms are often ongoing.

How to strengthen your skin:

  • Avoid excessive cleansing with water and soap.
  • Avoid harsh products, irritant chemicals and strong perfumes.
  • Avoid cleansing with excessively hot water, steam or high heat.
  • Do not over exfoliate.
  • Avoid excessive cleansing with water and soap.

Zap those Zits For Good

What is acne? Why do you have it? What are the best ways to avoid it and get your glowing skin back? Our RITES skincare expert, Liza-Marie has the answers right here for you.

What is acne?

No one factor causes acne. Acne occurs when the sebaceous (oil) glands are stimulated at the time of puberty or due to other hormonal changes. Acne is most common among teenagers, though it affects people of all ages. Sebum (oil) is a natural substance that lubricates and protects the skin. Acne is a condition that occurs when your follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. This leads to inflammation and bacterial infestation of P. Acnes. It often causes whiteheads, blackheads and pimples, and usually appears on the face, chest, upper back and shoulder. Acne signs and symptoms vary depending on the severity of the condition.

Acne treatments work by reducing oil production, fighting bacterial infection and reducing inflammation to help prevent scarring. Look out for power words such as antibacterial, germicidal, healing, repairing, protecting and mattifying on products.

Do the RITES thing – Start Skincare Young

Let’s tackle some FAQs and put the spotlight on starting skincare young.

Prevention is better than cure!

At what age should you start using skincare products?

You can start following a simple skincare routine from the age of ten. Whether or not you are interested in skincare at this age, the least you should do is simply introduce a mild, gentle cleanser. We recommend our Foam Fighter foaming face wash. Gently rub 1 to 2 pumps of foam into your face with clean hands and rinse off with warm water.

Is it bad to use anti-aging products at a young age?

Anti-aging creams can aggravate your skin and cause breakouts and congestion. These products are formulated for mature clients with different skincare needs. Often anti-aging creams are thicker and contains a high concentration of nourishing ingredients that can clog young skin which has a more natural oil production. We recommend applying our Control Freak SPF30 moisturizer in the morning to protect your skin during the day and Smart Hydrator moisturizer in the evening to repair and heal your skin at night. Our moisturizers are lightweight, quick absorbing and mattifying.

Do guys and girls require different skincare routines?

In general guys’ skin is thicker, oilier and ages differently because of hormonal changes. Another difference between guys and girls’ skin is in the amount of sweat the skin produces. A skincare routine should be based on your skin type, condition and lifestyle. Guys are often reluctant to follow a good skincare system; therefore, it is important to focus on products that are going to be easy to use and multifunctional.

How do you get a good skincare routine?

Keep it simple… No matter your age, gender, ethnicity, your skin needs gentle cleansing, exfoliation, hydration, year-round protection from the sun and healing ingredients. If you are young and not yet concerned about signs of aging or dealing with breakouts you still need a skincare routine and can start with these three easy steps:

  1. Cleanse: Wash your face with a gentle cleanser morning and evening.
  2. Tone: We recommend our Fresh Crusader toner face wipes to provide intensive cleaning without over drying the skin. Our wipes can also be used throughout the day to remove excess dirt and oil.
  3. Moisturize: During the day, apply a broad-spectrum sun cream with SPF 30 or greater to your face, neck, and other exposed areas of skin. At night, apply a facial moisturizer suitable for your skin type.
