Environmental Factors Influencing the Skin

Early on in my career as a young skin care therapist, I realized very quickly, that no product, pill or magic potion will ever stop the aging process all by itself. Nor will it get rid of your acne breakouts or be the complete answer to alleviate your skin sensitivity. Over the years, I learnt that one of the major culprits affecting the skin is the exposure to environmental factors. Today, as a skin care trainer and a brand educator, I am fascinated by the undeniable impact of the environment on all skin conditions. It is what will determine how fast you age; how well you age; the overall quality of your skin and, the effectiveness of the products you use.

Professional skin care brands such as QMS Medicosmetics has placed an important emphasis on protection against harsh environmental factors. In the field of skin care technology and scientific research, the latest findings lie in the science of epigenetics. In short, epigenetics is the science of how environmental factors influence our genes without changing the DNA sequencing. Genes can be switched “on” or “off”, leading to changes in the skin on the deepest cellular level.

Highly effective quality brands have their focus on protection against these factors as well as looking at innovative, advanced science to reverse existing damage.

Even though the science in this field is advancing, it is also important for each individual to be mindful of the factors that would influence their skin conditions. The goal is to minimize exposure to risk factors; use products to maximize protection and, if needed, include products that can effectively repair existing damage on the deepest cellular level.

Here are the main environmental factors that each person must be mindful of:

UV rays and the light spectrum:

Did you know that the sun is the number one cause of skin aging? Did you know that UVA rays can penetrate through clothing? The ultraviolet rays from the sun produce masses amounts of free radicals causing damage to cell membranes, cell functioning and DNA. The sun accelerates the appearance of multiple signs of aging. It causes dehydration, damage collagen fibres, accelerate wrinkle formation, leads to discolouration, and the list can go on.

Blue light from computer screens, tablets and smartphones is yet another culprit damaging the skin’s DNA. Even if you work indoors, daily protection against the full light spectrum is super important. Especially in South Africa where we are blessed with sunshine throughout the year, sun damage remains a major focus for consumers.

Today, we are lucky to have intelligent formulations that can protect against the full light spectrum and at the same time, act as a skin treatment – activating DNA protection and repair mechanisms in skin cells.

City living, urbanization, transport and industrialization in our modern times has increased the levels of air pollution. These microscopic pollutants not only sit on the surface of the skin damaging the protective barrier, but also enters our cells where they do harm to our cellular DNA.

QMS Epigen products are especially designed to help the skin’s detoxification process from these microscopic particles. At the same time, these super advanced intelligent formulations have the power to strengthen the skin against pollution and prevent environmental damage. The cell’s repair mechanisms are activated, and skin protection enhanced on a whole new level!

Climates can be humid or dry, icy or extremely hot. These conditions will influence the skin’s protective barrier. Climatic conditions vary drastically between different regions and this will affect how you protect your skin.

With the change of seasons, you might also experience a change in your skin. I recommend changing your moisturizer to suit the climatic conditions. For instance, during the summer when the weather is warmer and more humid, you might opt for a light textured moisturizer and changing to a richer, more nourishing option during winter when the skin tends to get dry, tight and dull.

Changing moisturizer might also be of importance if you have moved to a new city or province.

An affordable and convenient add-on to your home care would be to include a skin-specific mask three times per week. This is especially necessary if you don’t have access to have your regular professional facial treatment.

Airconditioning & heaters:

Dehydration is characterized by tightness, fine lines, dullness and in extreme cases the skin will be sensitive and flaky. Indoor cooling and heating systems lead to increased risk of dehydration.

Look for ingredients such a hyaluronic acid, ceramides and sericin for a high-quality sealing effect that prevents trans-epidermal moisture loss.

Surface bacteria & airborne microbes:

Bacteria is everywhere but not all bacteria is bad or harmful. It is all about the balance of the good bacteria whose function it is to keep infections and inflammation in check. Highly effective formulations including probiotics enhance the good bacteria and in turn, reduce harmful bacteria that lead to acne breakouts.

It is advised to regularly exfoliate with AHA-based exfoliators that have an acidic pH to strengthen the acid mantle – the skin’s own defence mechanism to fight infection. Cleansers and toners must be pH balanced to also enhance the skin’s natural protective qualities.

Harsh topical chemicals:

There is a myriad of chemicals and certainly too many to mention in an article. The main culprits I look out for are soap, alcohol, mineral oils and petroleum by-products, sodium laurel sulphate, high levels of preservatives, synthetic perfumes and artificial colourants. These are known to strip the skin, cause irritations, allergies and overall have a negative impact the skin’s immune system.

If you are looking for clean, plant-based cosmetics, Team Dr Joseph combines 100% natural plant formulations with latest scientific findings. You will be amazed at the results!

Each and every skin is different, and every person has a unique set of circumstances. This is why we at Futurethis Consultancy believe in one on one consultation to advise a bespoke skincare routine. We are available for personal consultation at info@futurethis.co.za.

How to take care of wrinkled skin

How to take care of wrinkled skin

Ah wrinkles, they seem to appear overnight. One moment you are wrinkle free and the next they seem to pop up out of nowhere.

Usually around the age of 40, women notice a loss of skin firmness and tone. This then often leads to desperation in achieving fast and drastic results, and quick fixes or extreme treatments become an obsession. But the skin is a protective organ. It has its own intelligence, so any extreme treatment or superficial quick fix just won’t give lasting or comprehensive results.

When it comes to wrinkles, the key is collagen – this includes anything that can support, activate and protect the skin’s collagen. This is because collagen contributes to 70% of the skin’s structure. Collagen gives the skin firmness, volume and plays such an important role in the skin’s moisturizing processes. It is by far the most important structure of the skin. However, at the young age of 25 we already start to lose collagen gradually. By 35, the rate at which the skin loses collagen starts to exceed the rate at which collagen synthesis takes place and then, the various signs of aging seem to appear overnight.

First, you might notice small fine lines. Then fine lines are accompanied by wrinkles. As you grow older, a variety of different wrinkles appear. Horizontal lines on your forehead becomes deeper and deeper. Criss cross wrinkles appear on your cheeks. By the time we reach menopause, the aging seemed to have multiplied, and a quick fix won’t have the result you wish to see.

Wrinkle formation is a progressive and complex process. There is not one single factor that leads to the formation of wrinkles. Several biological processes, environmental, lifestyle and genetic factors play a role. While we cannot stop the aging process or change our genetic background, we can do something about the aggressive environmental factors that we are exposed to on a daily basis. We can make lifestyle choices that will support your skin (and our overall health) and slow down development of signs of aging.

So, what can you do about your winkles?

Like I have mentioned above, there is no quick fix or one magical answer that will get rid of your wrinkles overnight. Likewise, there is no one secret to stop the aging process either. We need to look at and respect the skin as an organ that forms part of our body as a whole. For example, there is no point in investing money in your skin care routine if the overall health is ignored.

Like Dr Erich Schulte’s famous quote goes:

“logic not miracles”

Based on this logic, here are my advice for tackling wrinkles:

  1. Stimulate your cell metabolism and circulation with exercise. No cell in the body – including the cells in the deeper dermal layers that make collagen – can live without oxygen. And as you age, oxygen supply to your skin gets less and less. Up to 50% of blood circulation to the skin can be lost over the age of 50. So, get the blood pumping. You will notice an instant glow on your skin and your whole body will love you for it! Remember to stay hydrated too.
  1. Nourish your skin from within. Nutricosmetics is a wonderful way to supplement your skin when life gets too busy to eat well. We all strive to eat well but let’s face it – in the real world we sometimes get too busy to cook. Often, we are just not in the mood to eat what we know we should eat. Although supplements do not replace a balanced diet, they can contribute to preventing and reversing wrinkles. With nutricosmetics, beneficial ingredients can be delivered via the blood circulation to deep layers of the skin where topical products cannot reach.
  2. Protect your skin from the sun and the environment. In South Africa, this is an absolute must. Spending your money on expensive serums and treatments without sun protection is yet another example of “expecting a miracle”. The sun is the number one accelerator of skin aging. Invest in an advanced sun protection product and be consistent your application of it. Indoors or outdoors, winter or summer; make sure this is a priority in your homecare routine. Luckily, with both Team Dr Joseph and QMS sun protection product, wrinkle formation is targeted at a cellular level. They are non-greasy and applies easily with no oily shine or irritating ingredients.

  1. Use an AHA based exfoliation at least 3 times a week. AHAs or fruit acids, not only rids the skin from dull dead cells, but they can also stimulate your skin to make collagen and elastin. So, while you are improving the skin’s texture and colour, you are also giving yourself an anti-aging boost and ensuring a better penetration of serums and moisturizers. I Spy, with unwrinkled Eyes…

The skin around the eyes is usually one of the first places to show signs of ageing, stress and other skin problems. Here, we will cover commonly asked questions about eye skincare, good eye care habits and our professional recommendations.

FAQ about Eye Care:

Where should I apply my eye care product?

They have been specifically designed for the eye contour area. Can apply the product up to the lower lash line, in the grooves of crow’s feet and under to eyebrow to have a lifting effect. All other retail products, including serums & masks, need to be applied up to the bony areas of the eye socket.

How should I apply my eye care product?

You can apply a small pea size amount of the product in a gentle tapping movement around the eye contour area – up to the lower lash and just under the eyebrow, over the orbital bone. Use your middle finger with a gentle patter working outwards towards the temples.

Aren’t eye creams just more-expensive moisturizers in a smaller package?

The skin around the eyes are thinner and specialised products for the eye area will spread up and around the eye to where they are needed. Eye creams tend to have a lighter texture and is more easily absorbed by the skin. They also contain active ingredients aimed at the problems we see around the eye area.

The skin around the eyes is more fragile, more prone to dryness, and quicker to show signs of aging and fatigue. Squinting and constant movement of the eyes also accelerate the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and fluids collect under the eyes and cause puffiness and dark circles. Eye creams are specially formulated to target these common concerns.

Why should eye care products not be applied on top of the eyelid?

The eyelids are fragile, and the skin is thinner than the rest of the face. The skin on the eyelids is the thinnest skin in the body and more prone to sensitivity. The eyelids also contain fewer oil glands. You should not apply products to the eyelids because it can run into your eyes and cause irritation, puffiness and redness.

What type of skin do I have?

There is no single factor that causes acne. Acne develops when the sebaceous (oil) glands are activated during puberty or due to other changes in hormone levels. Acne is most common among adolescents but affects people of all ages.

Sebum (oil) is a natural liquid, lubricating material that protects the skin. Acne is a condition that occurs when your follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. This results in inflammation and bacterial infestation of P. Acnes. Acne often causes whiteheads, blackheads and pimples, which typically occurs on the face, chest, upper back and shoulder. Signs and symptoms of acne differ according to the severity of the condition.

Acne treatments work by reducing the production of oil, fighting bacterial infection and reducing inflammation to help prevent scarring. Search for power terms on goods such as antibacterial, germicidal, healing, repairing, protecting and mattifying on products.

Caring for Dehydrated Skin

Dehydrated skin, the most common everyday concern experienced by many as the aging process unfolds. It is a topic which comes back again and again as people are looking for answers to alleviate the discomfort dehydration creates.

So why does the skin get dehydrated and what are main the factors that play a role?

Did you know that collagen plays a role in 60% of the skin’s moisturizing processes?

Unfortunately, from the age of 25 we start to lose collagen which then gradually diminishes as the aging process progresses. This affects the quantity and quality of the skin’s collagen. Let’s use the analogy of grapes and raisins. Think of a young skin filled with juicy, firm grapes. As the aging process unfolds, these grapes gradually turn into raisins. They lose their firmness, store less water and become soft and wrinkly. Now, we cannot pour water over a raisin and expect it to become a firm grape again And the same applies for our skin collagen. No matter how much water you drink, if the collagen is of a bad quality, the skin cannot retain water and you will notice this in the skin’s radiance – or lack thereof. Fine lines will appear and, skin tightness is ever present.

But how do we protect quality and quantity of collagen if we cannot stop the aging process? This brings me to my second point…

Protection against the sun and the environment…

Biological aging cannot be stopped. Not for anyone. But we can protect ourselves against those factors that accelerate and aggravate dehydration.

Imagine that you have a bunch of fresh grapes which you don’t get the chance to eat. If they continue to lie in the fruit basket, eventually they will start to resemble a raisin. Now, if we leave those grapes outside in the sun, they will become raisins in record time.

Protecting your skin against the sun is an absolute top priority for South Africans as we are lucky (or unlucky) to have sunshine all year round affecting the quality of our skin’s collagen.

In addition to the negative effects of the sun, there are microscopic particles from pollution that causes damage our cells and further aggravate dryness. Airconditioning is well known to encourage loss of moisture from the skin. People who spend their time in an airconditioned environment often complain about skin tightness and dullness.

Therefore, products that are highly concentrated with superior antioxidants protect your skin cells and keep the collagen in your skin of a high quality.

Invest in a deeply moisturizing facial mask…

Masks are often underestimated and under used. They provide your skin with an instant boost and they often have more than one benefit. For example, in addition to the hydration you want, the right mask can bring major anti-aging results, decongest the skin from impurities and energize tired skins. On top of that, they can save you time and money when you don’t have a chance to go for a facial.

And, last but not least, upgrade your cleansing and toning routine.

It is simple and often the most affordable way to boost the skin’s moisture content. Harsh cleansers may strip the skin of the valuable protective oils. As you go about your day, the skin then has a diminished protection and you lose moisture from the skin.

Since there are so many different product options on the market, I would strongly advise you speak to a skin care professional to make sure you are spending your money on the right products for you. Get in touch with us at info@futurethis.co.za so that we can refer you to a knowledgeable and passionate therapist who you can trust.

Myth #5: All Vegan products are natural

There is much hype and focus on vegan products recently with many people opting to live a more vegan friendly lifestyle. Consumers are demanding products that do not harm or exploit animals and we agree 100%!

But there is also confusion about what vegan and natural cosmetics mean respectively. And considering this, I would like to clarify and highlight a few aspects for you to consider. This will allow you, the consumer, to ask the right questions and therefore be able to make educated decisions about your skin care products.

The vegan certificate guarantees the exclusion of all animal products and animal testing. Some animal derived ingredients include collagen, gelatine, carmine, cholesterol, honey and beeswax. Although it is true that the cosmetic industry has a history of exploiting animals for their ingredients, more and more regulations have been put in place to restrict the harm to animals. Vegan trends and increase of veganism globally have led to the assumption that all animal derived ingredients are ‘bad’ or ‘harmful’ and likewise, that all vegan products are therefore natural. This is not the case as Fabian Franz from Team Dr Joseph explains: “Beeswax, for instance, is not allowed in vegan cosmetics. Nevertheless, it has an excellent protective and soothing effect on the skin. Besides, during the extraction from sustainable cultivation, bees will not come to any harm.” He further explains: “On the other hand, the “vegan” certificate says nothing about the components themselves. Something called “vegan” may contain synthetic ingredients, pesticides, hormones, and other additives” says Fabian Franz.

At Futurethis, we agree wholeheartedly with sustainable sourcing and production of cosmetics. We strive to offer ecologically friendly and sustainable brands to our consumers. But we also believe that results, safety and quality are of paramount importance too. A combination of all these factors is what makes up a success story. We recommend careful inspection of labels if you are looking for natural products free from harmful ingredients and concentrated with high quality results-driven formulations.

Team Dr Joseph HighTech Natural Cosmetics are completely natural and, apart from the sustainable honey and beeswax in a few products, the range’s core ethics are rooted in plant-based ingredients, holism and innovative science. With each product you get quality natural formulations, a lower carbon footprint to benefit all on our planet and still get the results you want.

Team Dr Joseph offers a wide range of products for all skin types and ages.

Myth #4: Milky cleanser does not effectively cleanse the skin

Gel, oily, milky – how do we know exactly which is the right cleanser for us. Our skincare expert Anel Engelke explains the importance of choosing the right products for your skin.

I always ask clients: “does your skin feel tight after cleansing?” and if the answer is yes, I am afraid that it has stripped the skin from the important protective oils.

A tight feeling often leads to oiliness later in the day as the skin becomes exposed to the negative environmental factors. Tightness could also lead to dullness and roughness.

Picking the right cleanser not only for effective deep cleansing, but it’s so important to prepare the skin for ingredients in serums and moisturizers to penetrate. We invest so much into these wonderful serums and moisturizers but, often incorrect cleansing products prevents the results to show and sadly, a waste of money too.

Plant oils with hydrating and anti-inflammatory benefits combined with an emulsifying agent, deeply cleanses and purifies the skin from excess oil, debris, make up and pollution. The skin feels soft but clean. Ready to take in those wonderful ingredients too.

We recommend the following products:

TDJ Daily Cleansing Milk

QMS DEEP GENTLE CLEANSER Cleansing Lotion 200ml

(add a soft cleansing sponge to feel extra smooth)

Myth #3: My skin is oily therefore I don’t need to use a moisturizer

It is important to remember that the skin is a protective organ. Water is the most essential requirement for all living cells, including your skin cells. Without water, cells can simply not live.

An excessively oily skin could be a sign of severe dehydration of the skin. All skins need protection to prevent moisture loss. The environment we are exposed to causes water to evaporate from the skin. Air conditioners, pollution and the sun encourage moisture loss. Also, oily skin clients tend to strip their skins with harsh soapy cleansers too. The skin in turn wants to protect this loss of water by secreting more oil. This is often the cause of that excess shine you wish you could control.

Moisturizers also contain important protective ingredients called antioxidants. These antioxidants help to fight the negative impact that the environment and lifestyle choices have on our skins.

If the skin’s protective qualities are damaged, how should it protect itself from water loss? How is it supposed to protect us from microbes, infections and irritations? If excessive oil secretion persists, it can break the skin’s immune system and clog your pores – the perfect environment for blackheads, breakouts and blemishes to develop.

All you need to do is to find the right moisturizer for your skin type and the correct protection for your environment.

We recommend the following products:

TDJ Daily Purifying Facial Cream
50 ml

QMS LIQUID PROTEINS Day & Night Lotion 50ml

Myth #2: Thick moisturizers are the best for dry skins

I often hear:

“apply so much cream but my skin stays dry”.

Thick and heavy creams are outdated and replaced with lightweight textures packed with powerful and deep penetrating actives to enhance how the cells function.

Moisturizers with high water content and which contain mineral oil, have the potential to increase aging and make the skin ‘addicted’ to the moisturizer. When such a moisturizer is applied, the skin feels moistened and supple, however, as the day goes by, the water from the cream and the skin evaporates. In addition to this, the mineral oils could further dehydrate and clog the skin. Suddenly, the skin then ‘craves’ the moisturizer again.

When one looks at how the skin cells are affected, the aging process is in fact accelerated. Normally, the dead horny layer of the epidermis sloughs off as new skin cells from deeper in the skin push them off. However, in this case the dead cells cannot slough off due to intercellular glue that becomes sticky. This is not a good thing as growth factors are inhibited and without growth factors, no rejuvenation can take place. The skin then becomes dull, rough and lined while it continues to crave the moisturizer.

We recommend regularly exfoliation with fruit acids (AHAs) to remove dead skin but also stimulate regeneration and collagen production. By simply adding this step to your routine you will get much more results from the products you apply afterwards.

Serums containing collagen and/or hyaluronic acid are light in texture and most effective at increasing the skin’s moisture storage capacity. Adding a serum is the most effective way to achieve and boost results.

A smooth and glowing skin are signs of a well moisturized skin.

We recommend the following products:

TDJ Ultra Hydration
Serum 30 ml

(90% instant hydration)

TDJ Fruit Acid Peel
50 ml

COLLAGEN SYSTEM 3-Step Routine Set 3 x 30ml

(proven to increase moisture by 201% in only 1 month!)
