How to take care of wrinkled skin

Ah wrinkles, they seem to appear overnight. One moment you are wrinkle free and the next they seem to pop up out of nowhere.

Usually around the age of 40, women notice a loss of skin firmness and tone. This then often leads to desperation in achieving fast and drastic results, and quick fixes or extreme treatments become an obsession. But the skin is a protective organ. It has its own intelligence, so any extreme treatment or superficial quick fix just won’t give lasting or comprehensive results.

When it comes to wrinkles, the key is collagen – this includes anything that can support, activate and protect the skin’s collagen. This is because collagen contributes to 70% of the skin’s structure. Collagen gives the skin firmness, volume and plays such an important role in the skin’s moisturizing processes. It is by far the most important structure of the skin. However, at the young age of 25 we already start to lose collagen gradually. Horizontal lines on your forehead becomes deeper and deeper. Criss cross wrinkles appear on your cheeks. By the time we reach menopause, the aging seemed to have multiplied, and a quick fix won’t have the result you wish to see.

Wrinkle formation is a progressive and complex process. There is not one single factor that leads to the formation of wrinkles. Several biological processes, environmental, lifestyle and genetic factors play a role. While we cannot stop the aging process or change our genetic background, we can do something about the aggressive environmental factors that we are exposed to on a daily basis. We can make lifestyle choices that will support your skin (and our overall health) and slow down development of signs of aging.

So, what can you do about your winkles?

Like I have mentioned above, there is no quick fix or one magical answer that will get rid of your wrinkles overnight. Likewise, there is no one secret to stop the aging process either. We need to look at and respect the skin as an organ that forms part of our body as a whole. For example, there is no point in investing money in your skin care routine if the overall health is ignored.

Like Dr Erich Schulte’s famous quote goes:

“logic not miracles”

Based on this logic, here are my advice for tackling wrinkles:

  1. Stimulate your cell metabolism and circulation with exercise. No cell in the body – including the cells in the deeper dermal layers that make collagen – can live without oxygen. And as you age, oxygen supply to your skin gets less and less. Up to 50% of blood circulation to the skin can be lost over the age of 50. So, get the blood pumping. You will notice an instant glow on your skin and your whole body will love you for it! Remember to stay hydrated too.

We spend our lives warding off wrinkles, but the bottom line is that we are all going to experience wrinkles at some point in our lives. It is a natural part of aging. There are some who embrace their laugh lines and eye crinkles; but want to iron out their worry lines. Unravelling Wrinkles

Types of wrinkles:

  • Forehead lines: run horizontally across the top of the T-zone.
  • Worry lines: create an “eleven” between the brows.
  • Bunnies: across the bridge of the nose horizontally between the eyes.
  • Crow’s feet: radiate from the outer corners of the eyes.
  • Laugh lines: also called nasolabial folds, create parenthesis around the upper lip.
  • Lip lines: form vertical hatches around the perimeter of the mouth.
  • Marionette lines: frame the chin vertically, and as the cheeks droop, jowl wrinkles form.

Three categories of wrinkles:

Dynamic wrinkles. These develop from repeated facial movements. The most common locations for dynamic wrinkles are between the eyebrows, forehead wrinkles, and on the cheeks near the outer corners of the eyes, referred to as ‘crow’s feet’.

Static wrinkles. Static wrinkles are caused by damage to the skin from sun, smoking, genetics, poor nutrition, or from prolonged dynamic wrinkling.

Hyperpigmentation is probably the number one skin concern of many South African’s today. It affects all skin types But, with this skin condition, there is no quick fix or easy answers. The reason for this is that there exists more than one type of pigmentation, each one influenced and caused by many factors.

In this blog, I aim to educate you about some major types of pigmentation and provide you with realistic and honest advice on how to achieve true, long lasting results. I am writing this from my own personal experience as this is my major skin priority and one that I have spent many years trying to understand. I am happy to report that I have seen the most remarkable results using QMS for my pigmentation!

The most honest advice I can give anyone today is that pigmentation is manageable but not curable. Although you will most likely not get rid of your problem 100%, the good news is that pigmentation is treatable, and with the right advice in homecare, professional treatments and – very importantly – lifestyle choices, you will see successful results long term.

Figuring out your major form of pigmentation

  1. Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation

    Simply put, this is a darkening of the skin following inflammation or trauma. Skin’s with a naturally darker pigment might find that after an acne breakout, (you know, those annoying pimples caused by stress or hormones), often leave a pigmented scar after healing has occurred. The skin is a protective organ. If it has experienced trauma and it knows that it has strength in its pigment, it will activate the melanocytes and melanin synthesis will be increased. Combine this with the sunny South African weather and what you get is pigmentation.

    Another example is the development of pigmentation in men who shave regularly. If the shaving is aggressive or any irritation is experienced afterwards, he may develop pigmentation.

    Also, take caution if you have a darker skin when you consider active aesthetic treatments such as laser and peels. Your post treatment care is where the success lies. Less is more. Protection and repair with high quality topical anti-inflammatories are extremely important as this will prevent inflammations turn into pigmentation.

  3. Hormonal pigmentation

    This is almost always the trickiest form of pigmentation to treat as the major culprit is from hormonal origin.

    All women are subject to develop hormonal pigmentation during pregnancy and with the use of contraceptive medication. It is true that some are more prone to developing this while others will not. The hormones influence the skin by making it more sensitive to UV rays. Once exposed to UV rays, the melanocytes are activated to produce increased amounts of melanin. Unfortunately, in an uneven and irregular fashion. If possible, stop or change the form of contraception. And in the case where this is not possible, the focus needs to be on strengthening and protecting the skin.

    I would recommend a product containing tyrosinase inhibitors. Tyrosinase is an enzyme that activates the melanocyte to produce melanin when exposed to UV rays. A tyrosinase inhibitor will intercept this process and thereby reducing the synthesis of melanin, improving the appearance of hyperpigmentation.   • Commitment

    This means accepting personal responsibility to do what is necessary to achieve these results. You need to commit to this for the long run. This means also accepting that quick fixes are out of the question. And if you are in this for the long haul, you will have to look at committing to the lifestyle choices that only you can make too. A few examples that come to mind: Committing to use the home care products, every day; Arriving for your professional treatments; Not spending time outdoors without sun protection; Looking at factors that affect your skin in general; and sticking to your routine by being disciplined.

    As a professional skin care advisor, I can tell you what to do, I can do your treatments successfully however, only you can ensure that consistency takes priority. Only you have the power in making informed decisions in your every-day life. You might be spending the money and expecting results, but only with consistency and comprehensive focus will one achieve the desired results.

  • Investment

    Treating pigmentation is a long-term investment. There is no way around this fact. This is relevant no matter what treatment choice you go for; or what brand you select to use. You will be required to invest in highly concentrated products and maintain this over a period of time. You will simply waste your money if you buy on price rather than value. Or worse, spend money on treatments and gaining no results if they are not complimented with the correct and relevant home care products. I like to look at this this way: If you go for a professional treatment of 1 hour once a month, you are doing 12 hours of treatment in a year. It is simply not realistic to expect results with 12 hours of treatment a year! On the other hand, if you invest in a 1 hour treatment every month and then back it up by using active products every day, you are then complimenting your professional investment and continuously treating our skin 365 days a year. This is what delivers realistic results and prevent you from wasting your time and money.

    This does not mean that you have to buy all the products at once. You can only stick to it if what you are using is also sustainable. Don’t feel overwhelmed. Speak to a professional and let them advise you according to your budget and lifestyle.

Where should I apply my eye care product?

They have been specifically designed for the eye contour area. Can apply the product up to the lower lash line, in the grooves of crow’s feet and under to eyebrow to have a lifting effect. How should I apply my eye care product?

Aren’t eye creams just more-expensive moisturizers in a smaller package?

The skin around the eyes are thinner and specialised products for the eye area will spread up and around the eye to where they are needed. What type of skin do I have?

The increase in your metabolism after eating is called the thermic effect of food (TEF). It’s caused by the extra calories required to digest, absorb and process the nutrients in your meal.

Protein causes the largest rise in TEF. It increases your metabolic rate substantially more than carbs and fats. Eating protein has also been shown to help you feel more full and prevent you from overeating.

Eating more protein can also reduce the drop in metabolism often associated with losing fat. This is because it reduces muscle loss, which is a common side effect of dieting.

Drink More Cold Water

Drinking water may temporarily speed up your metabolism. Studies have shown that drinking half a litre of water increases resting metabolism by 10–30% for about an hour.

This calorie-burning effect may be even greater if you drink cold water, as your body uses energy to heat it up to body temperature.

Water can also help fill you up. Drinking water a half an hour before you eat can help you eat less.

Do a High-Intensity Workout

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) involves quick and very intense bursts of activity. It can help you burn more fat by increasing your metabolic rate, even after your workout has finished.

Lift Heavy Things

Muscle is more metabolically active than fat, and building muscle can help increase your metabolism. This means you will burn more calories each day, even at rest.

Lifting weights will also help you retain muscle and combat the drop in metabolism that can occur during weight loss.

In one study, 48 overweight women were placed on a diet of 800 calories per day, along with either no exercise, aerobic exercise or resistance training. After the diet, the women who did the resistance training maintained their muscle mass, metabolism and strength. The others lost weight, but also lost muscle mass and experienced a decrease in metabolism.

Stand up More

Sitting too much is bad for your health! This is obviously partly because long periods of sitting burns fewer calories and can lead to weight gain. In fact, compared to sitting, an afternoon of standing up at work can burn an extra 174 calories!

If you have a desk job, try standing up for short periods to break up the length of time you spend sitting down.

Green tea has been shown to increase metabolism. It helps convert some of the fat stored in your body into free fatty acids, which may increase fat burning by 10–17%!

A jump lunge is the plyometric version of a regular lunge, which means you’ll be ‘jumping’ as you move your legs. Jump lunges work your legs — as your muscles work to jump and land (accelerate and decelerate against gravity) you develop power in the muscle. When jumping explosively, ensure you maintain a strong core and try to keep your balance as you alternate between each leg.

Tuck jumps
Tuck jumps are an advanced plyometric (jumping) exercise. In this exercise, you will be tucking your knees up to your chest as you jump. These may be somewhat challenging for those new to high intensity cardio, or if you have weak joints.

Jumping jacks
Jumping jacks are a great full body aerobic exercise. You’ll require enough space to spread your arms and legs out wide.

Mountain climbers
Mountain climbers are a whole body movement that not only increase your heart rate, but strengthen your shoulders, arms and core, too. It’s recommended that you use a yoga mat with this exercise.

Butt kicks
Butt kicks are another excellent leg exercise that will improve your coordination. If you’re new to doing cardio exercises at home, this is a great exercise to try because it’s pretty easy to get started. You don’t need much space, and you can step lightly or use a mat to keep to soften the sound of your feet hitting the ground. You can use butt kicks to build the resilience you’ll need to try some of the more high-intensity jumping exercises!

Step up with knee raise
The step up with knee raise exercise requires a solid surface, such as a box, step, or a sturdy chair for stepping up onto. Get creative and find ways to challenge yourself with what you already have available at home like a chair, staircase, or milk crate.

Box jump
Box jumps are great for raising your heart rate and building power through your legs! This exercise will strengthen your lower body, including glutes, quads, calves and hamstrings. Box jumps require a safe and solid surface to jump onto — such as a plyometric box, bench or step. If you do not have a sturdy surface for box jumps, broad jumps are a great no-equipment alternative. With broad jumps, you’ll jump along the ground instead of up onto a box.
