WHAT DOES A SUN PROTECTION FACTOR (SPF) MEAN?
It refers to the extra protection offered by applying a specific sunscreen lotion to the skin. The SPF number is an indication of how long the factor will protect your skin against UVB rays before you start burning and after how many minutes you need to reapply the sunscreen. The number can be multiplied by 2, 5 or 10 depending on the active sun screen filters used. Remember, there is no such thing as a “complete sun-blocker”, as all sunscreen lotions need to be reapplied at regular intervals.
No matter what the SPF is [30 or 50], consumers should reapply it every two hours if they are in the sun all day, i.e. at the beach. This is because sweating, rubbing of clothes and touching our skin will remove the sunscreen.
How to be sun smart:
- Always apply sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of a minimum of 20 and not higher than 50, to all exposed skin areas.
- Re-apply regularly (at least every two hours), after towel-drying, perspiring or swimming. Apply it liberally to all exposed skin; including the back of the neck, tips of ears, arms, feet and hands.
- Reduce time in the sun between 10 am and 4 pm.
- Wear sunglasses on bright days.
- Watch out for bright surfaces, like sand, water and snow, which reflect UV and increase exposure.
- Stay in shade near midday when the sun is strongest.
- If outdoors, wear protective clothing, a wide -brimmed hat, and UV-blocking sunglasses.

The Shadow Rule
An easy way to tell how much UV exposure you are getting is to look for your shadow:
- If your shadow is taller than you are (in the early morning and late afternoon), your UV exposure is likely to be lower.
- If your shadow is shorter than you are (around midday), you are being exposed to higher levels of UV radiation. Seek shade and protect your skin and eyes.
